“Trust me,” I heard you say
And you had me thinking
What is trust, anyway?

When you trust someone
You want to believe
They will do as they say

Ask yourself, though
Just because you would
Why in the world should they?

We believe we can
See people for who they are
But is that really true?

How many times
In the theater we call life
Are you even you?

I am only a hologram
You constructed in your mind
A blurry, myopic view

If instead of counting
On you to do what I would
I accept what you did

On the whole, I believe
There will be fewer times
When I feel so stupid

So, I must confess
If I trust you a little less
My life will be good

“What about mine,” you ask
Well, If I could care about it
I assure you I would!

Wonderful dissection of a much used, and least meant word! In this era of lies and fake news, “trust me” has come to be equivalent to “I am telling the truth” and not “you can entrust yourself to me”.
