Backward

“Why do you always live in the past?”
So often she chides me
I reply, “Living in the moment
Isn’t what it’s cracked up to be!”

In a world where all around us
Is getting so much worse, so fast
When overwhelmed, I seek refuge
In an enchanting place – the past!

The past… it’s a time when
I still have my innocence
I haven’t lost my confidence

The past… it’s a time when
My ambitions are all intact
My play is still in its first act

The past… it’s a time when
No mistakes have yet been made
The aspirations are not yet dead

The past… it’s a time when
I have not yet lost my drive
All my friends are still alive

The past… it’s a time when
The stars are brighter, the sky bluer
The air is cleaner, the water purer

The past… it’s a time when
There are no wherefores, no whys
There are only hellos, no goodbyes

The present? Well, it’s only fleeting
The future? It’s what I cannot see
If time were to regress backward
That would be just fine by me!

I find most poets live in the past. I agree – much brighter things to remember – usually. The rhyming was very effective in this poem.
