Faces

Some days
I wear my lover’s face
Behind it
I hide my insecurity

Some days
I wear my friend’s face
Behind it
I hide my selfishness

Some days
I wear my brother’s face
Behind it
I hide my resentment

Some days
I wear my teacher’s face
Behind it
I hide my ignorance

Some days
I wear my neighbor’s face
Behind it
I hide my indifference

Some days
I wear my poet’s face
Behind it
I hide my insensitivity

Some nights
When I am by myself
I take off all the faces
And become me again

Some nights
I treasure all my faces
I line them up in the closet
And care for them

Some nights
I walk into the closet
Stand and stare at the faces
I smile at them

Some nights
They walk out of the closet
Stand and stare at me
They smile at me

Some nights
I look in the mirror
I see a faceless head
It laughs at me

Some nights
I lie in my bed
Wondering which face they’ll see
When I am dead

Very nice. And Holmes – how does it matter what people think once you are dead ?

Elias, the last line is a thought about how people would remember us. 🙂

Wonderful thoughts!! Whether we like the face or not we have to face and have a dialogue with the face, face to face!!

I LOVE this poem! Spare words with profound meaning. It reminds me of the Shakespeare quote,
“God has given you one face, and you make yourself another.”
